30 November 2008: A four-day conference that brought together health staff from HIV clinics in 17 African countries ended on Saturday. The Paediatric AIDS Treatment for Africa (PATA) conference, which was co-founded and is sponsored by UK charity One to One Children's Fund, was held in Rwanda between 25 and 29 November. The conference is a unique forum for health staff in Africa as it brings together doctors, nurses, counsellors, pharmacists and nutritionists as equal partners and encourages them to share information.

World AIDS Day 2008: the 4th PATA Forum was held in Rwanda from 25-29 November 2008. The conference themes this year included "care of the very young infant", as recent research shows that 60% of children born with HIV will die before they reach the age of 2, unless they have access to appropriate treatment.
The Forum also focused on the role of nutrition in treating HIV-infected children and on special difficulties faced by children and their carers in conflict areas.
43 clinic teams, which included nutritionists for the first time, from 17 African countries participated in the forum this year and set their goals for the coming year. For further information on the PATA Forum, please go to www.teampata.org.

Treating HIV-infected children in South Africa |
 |

One to One Children's Fund runs a number of projects across South Africa that treat and provide support to HIV-infected children. In the Western Cape, we have entered into a partnership with the provincial government to help support the treatment of more than 2500 infected children at Groote Schuur Hospital and a number of orphanages and clinics in the region. In the Eastern Cape, we have helped set up fully-equipped HIV/AIDS treatment units for children at two hospitals, where we employ trained healthcare professionals to run a life-saving anti-retroviral treatment support programme for more than 1000 children.
