HIV AIDS

To fight HIV, we first had to fight prejudice.

It’s no great secret that the way to treat HIV is with anti-retroviral drugs (ARVs). It’s also no secret that not doing so is pretty much a death sentence.

In South Africa, at the start of the millennium, the Government did not accept that ARV’s would work. There was also widespread belief that parents in townships would be incapable of following the strict treatment regime for their children. One to One Children’s Fund didn’t accept that. Together with a remarkable doctor, Dr Paul Roux and his Kidzpositive organisation, we treated 250 children with ARV’s, in a pilot project. 3 years later the Provincial Government finally took over the and as a result, thousands of children who might have died, will live full lives.

Our next step was to co-found Paediatric AIDS Treatment for Africa (PATA) a network of clinics across Africa to improve care for 75,000 children who receive ARV’s. PATA’s ripple effect continues to gain momentum and save even more lives.
